The Whining Stranger's Song of the Day

22 June 2006

"Rock Lobster" by the B-52s (from the album The B-52s, 1979)

In anticipation of the wedding in a few days, I've started to think about the inevitable songs I harass DJs to play before I hit the dance floor. This is one of them. Though, as I discovered at a wedding last summer, I don't spring up from the "get down to the floor" part as easily as I did ten years ago.

I love the guitar riff in this song. Everyone else just looks at me as if I'm weird...oh, wait.

This song was positively made for my signature move: the two-fingers-in-a-sideways-Vee peekaboo over the eyes gesture. It makes my girlfriend giggle.

What a great song. You think the kids today even know it? I have a great memory of dancing to this at a family party with all the Baby Boomers.

No, I fear the kids don't know this tune. I played it in the car yesterday with the windows down, thinking myself the picture of uber-hipness, then I realized: I am a 32 year old nostalgia junkie playing music that's more than 25 years old. Egad.

Well, Joiseygirl, I suggest you find it this weekend, crank it up and dance!
